Dear Kristen, Tia, and Sid, We are so very sorry for your loss. Danny will be missed by many. We are all better people to have known such a good man. Danny was a proud father, husband and soldier. You three were his everything, no one loved you more than he did! We will keep you in our prayers that God will comfort you and give you peace. Thank you Danny for your service to our country, and for always being there for "B". I promise I will do the same for your 3. Much love, Mischel Psalm 23 The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. Amen.

Dear Kristen, Tia, Sid, and family. My prayers are with all of you at this time. I only new my cousin for a brief moment in time, and will always remember him, he was such an amazing man. I wish we all could have gotten together last summer with Jasmine and her kids. I know that if anything can get family through hard times it is God. I know the loss of loved ones and of a father all to well. Know that Danny will always be with you in your hearts, your memory, and in spirit. For my uncle John, my prayers are with you. It seems that the only time we have had contact with each other is in times of loss of family. Words can not explain the loss of children, know that everything happens for a reason and that Danny is with you in heart, your memory, and in spirit. I send all of my love and sincerest of condolences to all of you. May God watch over all of your family in this time of need. My name is Dave and I am a long time and close friend on Danny's Dad. They say the nut doesn't fall to far from the tree and that surely explains a lot of Danny's passions. Danny was totally committed to the important things in life like service to country, love and commitment to his family, and an ever growing ability to keep improving himself. I am so proud of the man Danny was during war and the man he was becoming in peace. A strong and committed Husband Father and Son. Although Danny was taken from us way too young, be sure that he left this world a little better of because of the man he was and the path he walked. I will miss you so very much. Your work on earth is now done Danny. May you Rest In Peace. Dave Siegel

As one of Danny’s faculty advisors, I know Danny learned a great deal during his time at SU, but as one of his instructors, I can also attest to how much others learned from Danny. Danny was my student in a course titled, Human Diversity in Social Contexts (SWK/WSP328). It’s a course that is cross-listed with Women and Gender Studies and meets a number of undergraduate core requirements; therefore, it attracts a good mix of students from other departments and Colleges in the University. Students in this course are exposed to readings and videos that address various aspects gender, race, ethnicity, social class, disability, sexual orientation, language, and age, but one of the signatures of the course is students’ reflection on their own life experiences, values, and beliefs. Some students find this a challenging task; they are superficial in their self-refection. Danny was NOT one of those students. Some students are reluctant to speak out in the group setting, perhaps leaving themselves vulnerable to criticism. Danny was NOT one of those students. Danny was enthusiastically engaged and stunningly candid, giving his classmates much to think about and react to. His participation was an integral part of the instruction that semester. One story is particularly memorable. We were discussing examples of prejudice that we witnessed or experienced in our daily lives, and Danny told the class that he had seen a van in his neighborhood with a racial slur painted boldly on the side. This was an unusually blatant example of our topic and we discussed it at some length. As the next class session was starting, Danny raised his hand and said that he had something more to say about the van. He told the class that he had approached the owners of the van and told them that it wasn’t a good idea to drive around with something like that. They washed their car. It was a simple act that made a huge impression on us all. Not only did Danny’s stories give a real-life context to the messages heard in class, but he also set an example of acting on one’s convictions that was more powerful than anything in the course syllabus. I have enormous respect for Danny’s courage, his perseverance, and his tireless good humor. We will miss his contributions to our classrooms and to the social work profession.

Danny was a student in the social policy course I taught this past spring semester. Although we did not have a long or close acquaintance, I got a feel for Danny’s potential as a social worker from his active class participation and conversations we had after class. I also recognized what a great spirit and personal charisma he had. What struck me about Danny were both his passion and his compassion. He was passionate about the needs of returning veterans and passionate about his interest in participating in their healing process. He had compassion for the problems being experienced by veterans and their families, but his compassion extended beyond veterans. In my course, we study the set of programs and policies in the U.S. that aim to assist persons in need—policies for health care, policies for housing, policies for persons in poverty, policies for children whose parents are not safely parenting them. Danny enriched the examination of the policies and their impact with his observations of how these policies are experienced by the people they serve. These were not angry or caustic observations, but empathetic and thoughtful ones. They came from his life experience, not only in the military, but as someone who has experienced challenges, himself, and who is sensitive to the challenges of those around him. In the image of Danny I’m keeping in my mind, he is sitting in the last row of my classroom, with a big smile on his face, but at the same time talking--contributing an observation or a statement that supports or augments the topic at hand. And while it is a happy image to have, it also reminds me that we have lost someone with much to offer, who would have been a wonderful social worker. I extend my condolences to all the members of Danny’s family.
