Balbir Kaur

Balbir Kaur, 92, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on July 26, 2026.

She was born on February 5, 1934, in the village of Wassankay, Sialkot district, in what is now Pakistan, to Sardar Piara Singh and Sardarni Pritam Kaur, in a close-knit farming family with two brothers and three sisters. Even as a child, she carried a strength of spirit that would define her entire life. At just 13 years old, she survived the Partition of Punjab in 1947, living through the upheaval and communal violence that claimed over a million lives and reshaped the subcontinent. Uprooted from her childhood home, she migrated to Eastern Punjab and, with quiet resilience, began life again from nothing.

In 1954, she married Sardar Sewa Singh, who had endured the same journey of displacement. She accompanied him during his years of service in the Indian Army before settling into life on the family farm, where together they raised four children and built a home rooted in faith, hard work, and love.

Balbir Kaur was predeceased by her husband in 1996. In 2000, she moved to the United States to live with her son, embracing a new chapter of life in her later years.

Faith was the quiet backbone of her every day. She read the Guru Granth Sahib without fail, morning and evening, for her entire life, and she passed that devotion on to her children, raising them on the stories and history of the Sikh faith.

Balbir Kaur lived a life marked by hardship, but never by bitterness — a life full, fulfilling, and deeply happy, carried forward by faith and family until the very end.

She is survived by her sons Tarlok Singh, Narinder Singh, and Gurdeep Singh; her daughter Kuldeep Kaur; and her grandchildren Kuljinder Singh, Daljit Kaur, Manpreet Singh, Amandeep Kaur, Harjit Singh, Navroop Kaur, Navjeevan Singh, and Adijot Singh.
