Edward Essel Obituary

Edward G. “Steady Eddy”  Essel, of Central Square, passed away peacefully at home at the age of 94. He was born on December 27, 1927 in Utica, NY to the late Joseph V. Essel and the late Augusta E. Herrmann. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 70 years, Mary Pat; and siblings Joseph Essel and Barbara Knittle.

Ed was a graduate of UFA High School and received an Associates Degree from Mohawk Tech in Utica, NY. Ed was a Navy Veteran of WW II serving aboard the USS Topeka and the USS Iowa. In retirement, Ed & Mary Pat loved camping and were members of the Good Sam Club. Ed & Mary Pat spent 17 years wintering in Lakeland, Florida. Ed devoted many years to his expert scroll saw woodworking and was a member of the Woodworkers of CNY. Ed was a member of Divine Mercy Parish in Central Square where he was an Usher for many years. Ed & Mary Pat loved Jitter Bugging to the sounds of the Big Band Era.

Ed is survived by his children, Marydiane (Bob) Scheemaker, David Essel, and Terrance (Paula) Essel; grandchildren, Anastasia (Kris) Socie and Joshua (Christine) Scheemaker; 3 great grandchildren, Ariana, Kaden, and Luke; many nieces and nephews.

 

The family would like to thank Marilyn Bratt and the entire homecare team who lovingly took care of Mary Pat & Ed for the past 3 years. They were truly our Angels from Heaven.

A Visitation will be held on Monday, January 17, 2022 from 3- 6 PM at Traub Funeral Home, Central Square. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday at 11 AM in the Divine Mercy Parish, Central Square. Burial with Military Honors will take place in Hillside Cemetery in the Spring. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Veteran’s group of your choice in Ed’s honor.
