Jane Powell Obituary

Jane Atkinson Powell died peacefully December 2, 2024.  She was a mother, teacher, and friend to many - doing charitable work to help those in need. Jane was a member of the Bernhards Bay Methodist Church and lifelong member of The Eastern Star.

Jane was born on June 13, 1929 in Plattsburgh, New York. She had an older brother, Douglass Atkinson and is survived by her younger brother, Sydney Atkinson. Jane was a teacher for over 30 years, primarily kindergarten, where she loved working with the very young. She touched the lives of many in her community and will be missed by all, as a teacher, friend and someone who helped shape the youth of her community into good citizens.

Jane married Ken Powell, a farm machinery mechanic and manager for New Holland. They settled in Bernhards Bay where they raised their four children and were a loving, happy couple with a real sense of humor. Jane and Ken had many adventures, traveling even to Alaska. They loved gardening, gathering berries, and watching for many species of birds as they enjoyed their property. Many hours were spent as a family playing cards and recreating outdoors. Jane’s pies are legendary; the recipes have been passed down several generations.

Jane is survived by her brother Sydney Atkinson, children: Tom Powell (Sherry Glenn), Doug Powell (Cathy Powell), Jim Powell (Beth Kerttula), and Nancy Powell (Jim Hutka, deceased); her grandchildren: Jonathan Powell (Erica Powell), Theron Powell (Caitlin Diggles), John Powell (Samantha Powell), and Kelly Powell; and seven great grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank Maureen (Mo) Woods, for her incredible kindness and companionship for Jane.  They also thank all the staff at The Cottages, and the staff at Greenpoint.

There will be a private memorial at a later date.  No flowers or gifts, please. Donations to the charitable cause of your choice or your local food bank in honor of her service. Those wishing to contact the family may do so at: 11 Presidential Dr, Gray ME
