Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, Jeff Bateman passed away on July 1, 2025.
Jeff was born on June 21, 1955, in Fulton, NY, to Leonard and June Bateman. He was the oldest son of their twelve children. Jeff attended Paul Smith’s College. He married Sherry James in her hometown of Phoenix, NY in 1985, and they went on to have four children; Geo, Stephen, Michelle and Derek. Jeff took pride in his career working at Owens-Illinois and Nine-Mile Nuclear plant.
He took immense pleasure in raising his children and coaching them through their soccer careers, showing such passion that he managed to accumulate more red cards than all of them combined.
For over thirteen years, Jeff discovered his greatest joy in being a grandfather. Known as Gramps to his grandkids, he loved nothing more than sharing stories, watching YouTube videos, chasing them through the house, and playing outside. He had a remarkable talent for bringing laughter and smiles to their faces, especially during the holidays when he donned a Santa Claus costume.
In his younger years, Jeff was a passionate outdoorsman and often reminisced about his time in the Boy Scouts of America. He dedicated numerous weekends to racing at the Fulton Dirt Track, where he excelled as an endurance driver. A lover of history and films, Jeff particularly appreciated when these interests intersected. He will always be remembered for sitting in front of his television, watching the History Channel, and enjoying peanut butter paired with a glass of milk.
Jeff was predeceased by his parents, Leonard and June Bateman, and his siblings; Erthus, Bradley, James and Eric Bateman.
Jeff is survived by his wife of 40 years Sherry; children Geo, Stephen (Kayla), Michelle (Michael) Sweeney, and Derek (Katelyn Holbrook); grandchildren Mia, Rose, August, Crew, Murphy, Lainey and Brady; his siblings Cheryl, Lynne Ryder, Keith, Martin, Jeannine Rammage, Timothy and Kris; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
There will be no calling hours. A private burial will be held.
In accordance with the family's wishes, memorial donations may be directed to the Athletic Booster Club of Fulton to benefit the Fulton Varsity Soccer teams.
