John Edward DeMong, 76, of West Monroe, passed away peacefully Monday at Upstate University Hospital, with his loving family by his side.
A lifelong resident of West Monroe, John was a graduate of Central Square High School ’67. He was a member of IBEW Local 97 and 1249 dedicating nearly 3 decades of his career to Niagara Mohawk/National Grid and Nelson Tree Service. During his career he was on the Fire Brigade (Nine Mile Nuclear Power Plant), Meter Reader, Lineman, and Tree Services retiring in 2012.
John was loved by his community and served it selflessly. He worked directly for the town serving as a Code Enforcement Officer and Town Justice of the Peace. He was a Cub Scout Leader in Troop 735. Most notably he was a Charter Member of the West Monroe Volunteer Fire Department where he served for 47 years and held the departments highest positions of Chief and President. John is a Veteran serving in the US Army as a Specialist 5 with the Combat Engineers during the Vietnam War, where he served two tours from 1968 – 1971 earning several merits for his service. In recent years he passionately served with the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). In his free time, John enjoyed camping, sharing coffee and donuts with friends, his daily stops at local diners, golf cart rides, tinkering around the house, and the occasional diet Pepsi fountain drink. Above all, John was a devoted family man and cherished his time with his loved ones. His love for his wife was unwavering, he molded two wonderful sons, and adored his time with his three grandchildren. His warmth, kindness, and easy-going nature left a lasting impression on all who knew him. John will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Susan (Huto); sons Jeremy (Teresa) of Orchard Park, Jeff (Vanessa) Central Square; cherished granddaughters, Jordan, Harper, and Charlotte; sister-in-law, Barbara (Richard) DeMong; nephew Richard DeMong (Bryn & Dominick); and niece Robyn DeMong; and many extended family members. John was predeceased by his parents, John and Doris DeMong.
To celebrate John’s life, relatives and friends are invited to gather on Friday June 27th, 2025 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Traub Funeral Home (684 N. Main St, Central Square). Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 28th 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at West Monroe Volunteer Fire Department (54 County Route 11, West Monroe) followed by burial services at Pine Plains in Clay, NY. Celebration will be held directly after at West Monroe VFD.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the West Monroe VFD or Disabled American Veterans (DAV) of Syracuse.
