Leighton "Mike" McElwain Obituary

Leighton M. “Mike” McElwain, of Constantia was born to eternal life on Thursday January 25, 2024 at home, surrounded by his loving family.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30AM on Friday, February 2, 2024 at The Parish of Divine Mercy in Central Square, NY. Per Mike’s request, “no monkey suits”; please dress casual.

The son of Dorothy McElwain, Leighton was born in Fort Covington, NY on January 3, 1943. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1961 until his honorable discharge in 1967. Mike was an Army mechanic, and served overseas in Germany. He married Theresa Davis on October 8, 1994 at St. Bernadette’s Church in Constantia.

Though he owned his own Gulf Gas station at one point, Mike worked for many years as a heavy equipment operator. He passed his skills onto his daughter, Kayleigh who followed in his footsteps in the same career. Mike was everyone’s “Mr. Fix It “and he could probably repair anything under the sun. He built his home; a “Haven of Rest” that his family will live in for years to come.

A lifetime member; Mike belonged to the Mad River Club in Lacona; the second oldest sportsman club in New York State. He loved to be outdoors; four wheeling in the summer, and snowmobiling in the colder months. Every weekend, he looked forward to spending time at their family Camp Lot in Boylston.

Mike played Hockey with the Salmon River Hockey Association, and was a fan of the Boston Bruins. He also liked NASCAR, especially Harry Gant and Jeff Gordon.

His patient attitude, recognizable laugh and “I’ll tell you what…” will be missed by so many. Even the quirky attributes he had, like the way he cut his food in squares or leveled out his mashed potatoes.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife; Terry, his children; Michael (Dawn) McElwain and Kayleigh (Clayton Wisinski) McElwain, a brother; Bruce (Marge) McElwain, his grandchildren; Jennifer, Gus and Grace, a great grandson; Bentley, as well as extended family and friends. He is predeceased by his mother; Dorothy, and stepfather; Lyle, as well as his previous wife; Joyce.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the Syracuse VA, the home based care team from Rome, NY, and Lynn Wise for their care and support.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Mike’s honor to the Constantia Fire Department or the North Shore Ambulance.
