Lydia Smith Obituary

Lydia N Smith – Syracuse, NY (former resident of Brewerton, NY)

May 17, 2021 Lydia departed this earthly realm for her home with Jesus. Her final days were spent in Upstate Medical Center after suffering a fall.  While there she received superlative care and was able to spend her final days with family under a comfort care exception.

Lydia was above all a woman of faith who was an active member of Brewerton United Methodist Church where she was a member of the choir, taught Sunday School, was a member of the United Methodist Church, and served as church historian.  She loved her family, showering them with love, and always believing in them. Lydia loved music, particularly Gospel and Country music.  She enjoyed crafts of all sorts: making Christmas ornaments for the grandchildren ever year, knitting intricate sweater for family, making quilts, and afghans.  In their retirement years that traveled throughout the United States.

She worked for E W Edwards making custom slip covers.  But most of all she was the one who was always there for the children, sending them off to school in the morning and welcoming them home at night.  She loved to cook with fresh vegetables from the garden, can pickles, and freeze vegetables including strawberries sufficient for us to enjoy strawberry shortcake every Sunday throughout the Winter.

She was the daughter of the late Niles and J. Grace Lord.  She had three brothers: Carlton N Lord (deceased), Alfred J Lord (deceased), and Philip A Lord; and one sister Eleanor Saunders (deceased).

She married Earl Joseph Smith on November 9, 1943 and enjoyed 77 wonderful years together.  During that time they raised four children and enjoyed many family activities together.   Above all else they shared a love that was there to celebrate accomplishments and provide support in difficult times.  They imparted values of hard work, honesty, importance of family, and a faith in Jesus.  Two of their children, David and Bruce are pastors who are currently serving churches.

Surviving family include: Brother – Philip A Lord, Children - David Smith, Bruce and (Kandace) Smith, Lori and (Steve) Bourdage, Kelley Gorman; grandchildren - Christopher and (Barbara) Smith, Sean and (Jennifer) Smith, Kasey and (Joe) Stone, Jason Armstrong, Summer Gorman: great grandchildren Madison Stone, Lillian Smith.

Viewing Hours from 10AM – Noon followed by a Service of Death and Resurrection will be held Friday, May 21st  at Brewerton United Methodist Church at 5395 Orangeport Rd, Brewerton, NY 13029.
