Roy Ronald Smith “Smitty or Leroy”, 93 of Bridgeport, New York died peacefully, surrounded
by family, Sunday, December 25, 2022 at home after a courageous battle with kidney disease.
Ron was born in Massena, New York to the late Roy Bernard and Sarah (Tann) Smith on June
10, 1929. He resided in Black Lake, New York until moving to Syracuse with his wife. Along
with his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Rita Fay (Merritt) Smith, sister Sue Pray, Ellen
Harvey, and brother Alan “Sonny” Smith.
He is survived by his son Stephen (Teri) Smith and daughters Deborah (Bill) Bryerton, Brenda
Thompson, Allison (Bill) Kraus and Valerie Schond. Several grandchildren, great grandchildren,
great-great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Ron retired from Carrier Corporation in Syracuse, New York following 38 years of service as a
Crane Operator/Hitcher. He lived in Bridgeport for over 65+ years. He was a dedicated hard-
working father that loved his family and friends. He enjoyed hunting and hanging out at his
camp in Forestport, NY and his camp family! He also enjoyed playing horseshoes.
He was also a lifelong member of the High Market Northern Pines Sportsman’s Club.
Calling hours will be held at Traub Funeral Home 7975 Route 31, Bridgeport, New York on
January 7, 2023 from 11 – 2 p.m. A gathering of family and friends following the calling hours
will be at the VFW in Bridgeport, New York.
Burial will be in the spring along with the love of his life Rita F. Smith. A Celebration of Ron
and Rita’s life will be held on June 10, 2023 at their son Steve Smith’s home.
