Samuel E. Carista, 90, of West Monroe, passed away peacefully with his family by his side early Friday morning.
Sam was a heavy equipment operator for Earl Becker Construction for 49 years prior to his retirement in 1993. He cherished his family. Sam had a deep love for racing, racing at local tracks from 1948-2018 and winning several races and championships; earning himself the nickname of “Slammin Sam” early on in his racing career. He looked forward to his “night life” with family and friends, which always involved karaoke and dancing.
Surviving are his children, Edward (Lynn) Carista, Michael (Kye) Carista, Cynthia Ottoway, Diane Curcie and Fred, Sharon (Charles) Morey, Wendy (Earl) Becker, Glen (Mary) Carista, and Doris Halsey; 43 grandchildren; 51 great grandchildren; 9 great great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and many loving friends.
Sam was predeceased by his loving wife of 60 years, Doris, in 2011; their son and his wife, William (Mariea) Carista; and sons-in-law, Jerry Curcie and Douglas Halsey.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, April 5, 2021 from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Traub Funeral Home, Central Square with a funeral service immediately following. Burial will be in the West Monroe Cemetery on Tuesday, April 6, 2021 at 1:00 PM. In compliance with COVID-19 regulations, masks are required and attendance will be limited to current NYS guidelines.
