Susan LeFever Obituary

Susan (Rock) LeFever (1946–2024)

Avid local historian, family genealogist, Erie Canal fanatic, lighthouse aficionado and die hard Yankees fan Susan R. LeFever (nee Rock), 77, died after a brief illness on February 11th.

A lifelong Syracuse area resident, Susan was born in 1946 to Karl and Arlyn Rock, and grew up on the Northside before later moving to North Syracuse.  She spent summers surrounded by many generations of extended family and friends at Camp Susie – her namesake – fishing, water skiing and playing cards. Susan graduated from North Syracuse High School in 1964 before beginning a long career at New York Telephone, ultimately retiring from Verizon in 2000.  There wasn’t a ruler, tape measure or coffee mug in the house without the requisite command to Call Before You Dig!

In retirement, Susan was active within the local community, serving in volunteer leadership roles at Shacksboro School House Museum, the Friends of the Baldwinsville Public Library and the Schroeppel Historical Society.  Additionally, she was a highly respected, knowledgeable and prolific contributor to two facebook groups: Nostalgic Syracuse and Reflections on the History of Syracuse and Central New York, where it has been noted, “She was the soul of our group.”  She also spent quiet time keeping watch over all manner of vessels as they made their way through the lock system on the Oswego River canal, the Day Peckinpaugh a perennial favorite.

Susan will be remembered for her spirited personality, fierce independence, love of a cold beer and particularly unique eye roll.

Susan was predeceased by her parents and brother Gene. She is survived by her sister-in-law Jane of Clay, NY, half-sister Barb Ewing of Wisconsin and her children: Linda (Gerard) of Boston, MA and William (Melissa) of Kaneohe, HI.  She was the very loving grandmother of Henri Mamura LeFever.  She is also survived by her ex-husband William and his wife Marsha of Belgium, NY, Melissa Oliver and family of Richmond, VA, Sally LeFever of Albany, NY as well as many dear cousins, nieces, nephews and friends along the river.

There will be no immediate services; a celebration of Susan’s life will be held later this spring, with details to follow.  Donations in her name may be made to the Friends of the Baldwinsville Public Library or the Shacksboro School House Museum.
