Winifred Stevens Obituary

Winifred Joan Stevens, 90, of Hampton Manor, New York went home to her great reward on Friday, May 16, 2025. She was predeceased by her loving husband, James W. Stevens who died August 4, 2017, as well as her sisters, Rita Lalone, Eileen Palmer, Theresa Vincelette, and Bernadette "Bunny" Steckel. Winnie was born December 1, 1934 in Canton, New York, daughter of the late Frank and Julia Cunningham Palmer. Following Frank Palmer's death in 1935, Julia married Harley Daniels who the girls always loved and considered "dad." Winnie and her four sisters enjoyed a simple country life on the farm. After graduating from Canton High School, Winnie went to work at a small diner in the area. There she met the love of her life, Jim, who was attending college at the time. Following a brief romance, they were married on June 18, 1955. They moved to Hampton Manor and were blessed with three children. Winnie retired from East Greenbush Central School District in East Greenbush, New York following many years of service as a food service worker as well as a teachers aide.

She was a member of the Sweet Adelines Chorus, they entertained and competed at many different venues both locally and across the state. She enjoyed bowling and was a member of the PTA. Her greatest joy was spending time with her natural grandchildren as well as all of her extended grandchildren and her family. Winnie was a mother to many. Her smile and laugh were contagious. She was a natural caregiver and a selfless individual. In her later years Winnie resided at The Spinney at Pond View. Her porch became a gathering place that helped to bring the community together. She and her family have created lifelong friendships with several of the Spinney residents.

Winnie is survived by sons, George and Marc Stevens; daughter, Deborah (Steve) Van Dam; grandchildren, Laura Stevens, Kathleen (Cat) Stevens and Collin Stevensl; many nieces and nephews.

Our family would like to thank Community Hospice especially Paul, her RN and Rachel, her social worker. Their patience and kindness has been immeasurable.
